Noorani Qaida: What It Is and Why Every Beginner Starts With It
By ARABYPLUS Teaching Team6 min read

If you've looked into Quran classes for your child, you've probably heard of the Noorani Qaida. It's the book most teachers use for beginners, and for good reason.
What is the Noorani Qaida?
The Noorani Qaida is a beginner's book that teaches how to read Arabic letters and words with correct pronunciation. It's named after its author, Sheikh Noor Muhammad Haqqani, and has been used by Quran teachers around the world for generations.
It doesn't teach the meaning of words. Its goal is simple: to help the student read the Quran correctly from the Mushaf.
What does it teach?
The Qaida moves step by step, with each lesson building on the one before:
- The Arabic letters, and how each one sounds.
- Letter shapes: how letters change at the start, middle, and end of a word.
- Short vowels (Fatha, Kasra, Damma), which give letters their sounds.
- Tanween, the doubled vowel marks at the end of words.
- Sukun and Shaddah, for stopping on a letter and doubling it.
- Long vowels (Madd), for stretching certain sounds.
- Reading full words and short phrases taken from the Quran.
How long does it take?
It depends on age, practice, and how often the student has classes. As a general guide, many children finish the Qaida within a few months with two or three classes a week and a little practice at home. Adults often move faster.
The goal isn't to finish quickly. It's to finish correctly, because good habits learned here last a lifetime.
Why not skip it?
Some parents want their child to start reading the Quran right away. But students who skip the Qaida often struggle later with pronunciation and Tajweed, and have to go back and fix mistakes. A strong start saves time.
Tips to make it easier
- Practice for 5 to 10 minutes a day. Short, daily practice works better than long sessions once a week.
- Listen and repeat. Hearing the correct sound before reading it helps a lot.
- Celebrate small wins. Finishing a lesson is a real achievement.
- Learn with a teacher. Correct pronunciation is hard to learn from a book alone. A teacher hears and corrects mistakes right away.
