How to Choose an Online Quran Teacher for Your Child: 7 Questions to Ask
By ARABYPLUS Teaching Team7 min read

Online Quran classes have made it possible for families anywhere in the world to find a teacher. But with so many options, how do you know who to trust with your child's learning? Here are seven questions to ask before you decide.
1. Where did the teacher study?
A good Quran teacher should have a recognized religious education. Look for graduates of established institutions such as Al-Azhar University, and for teachers who hold an Ijazah, a certification showing they recited the Quran to a qualified teacher.
2. Does the teacher have experience with children?
Knowing the Quran well and teaching it to a 6-year-old are two different skills. Ask whether the teacher has taught children before, and how they keep young students engaged.
3. Can the teacher explain clearly in English?
If your child thinks in English, the teacher needs to explain rules, correct mistakes, and encourage them in English. A short trial class will quickly show you whether communication is easy.
4. Is there a clear learning path?
Ask what your child will learn first, what comes next, and how progress is measured. A structured path usually goes from the Noorani Qaida, to reading from the Mushaf, to Tajweed and memorization.
5. Will you receive progress updates?
You shouldn't have to guess how your child is doing. Look for regular progress reports that tell you what your child learned, how they're doing, and the next goal.
6. How is your child kept safe?
This question matters more than any other. Ask:
- Can parents attend any class?
- Does all communication go through the parent, never privately with the child?
- Is there a written safeguarding policy?
- Are female teachers available for girls?
If the answers are unclear, keep looking.
7. Can you try before you commit?
A trial class lets you see the teacher's style, how your child responds, and whether the schedule works. Avoid long contracts before you're sure.
Red flags to watch for
- No information about the teacher's qualifications.
- Pressure to pay for several months upfront.
- The teacher asking to message your child directly.
- No clear answer about what your child will learn.
